De natuur blijft me inspireren!
Voor de zomer schilderde ik deze drie gele kevertjes. Het contrast tussen geel en zwart vind ik erg interessant. Het schilderen van zo'n kleine schepseltjes is heel intens. Ik ben er passioneel mee bezig en het geeft een goed gevoel als er weer een schilderijtje af is! 

Nature keeps inspiring me! 
​Before summer I painted these three yellow beetles. I've really been enjoying the contrast of yellow and black. To paint such tiny creatures is an intense job and it requires great dedication and passion but it is very rewarding!

Daar ik nog in vakantie modus ben, wil ik me verontschuldigen dat jullie niet veel nieuwe berichten te zien krijgen. Dit is een vlinder die ik schilderde net voor mijn vertrek naar Engeland, een opdrachtje voor een huwelijkscadeau. Het koppeltje wilde een kleurrijke vlinder met beide namen erbij en de illustratie zal waarschijnlijk gebruikt worden voor de uitnodiging.

Since I'm still in holiday mode, I hope you'll excuse me from not showing up with a lot of new posts. This is a butterfly I painted just before leaving for England, a commission for a wedding present. The couple wanted a colorful butterfly with both names and it will probably be used for the wedding invitation.

Ik vind het leuk om nu en dan met kleurpotloden te werken. Het is een erg rustgevende bezigheid. Met wat goede muziek op de achtergrond kan ik uren doorgaan. Je werkt altijd in laagjes. Een gekleurde potloodtekening kan gemakkelijk dertig tot veertig lagen kleur bevatten. Door de doorschijnende eigenschappen van dit medium speelt het wit van het papier een belangrijke rol in dit proces.

​Now and then, I love to work with color pencils. It's a very easeful activity. With some good music in the background I can go on for hours. It's a real build-up job. A colored pencil drawing can easily have thirty to forty layers of color applied. Because of the translucent qualities of this medium, the white of the paper plays an important role in this proces.   

De grote ijsvogelvlinder (Limenitis populi) is sinds 1957 uitgestorven in Vlaanderen. Hij is wel nog op enkele plaatsen in Wallonië te vinden. Ik mag er niet aan denken hoeveel mooie exemplaren al verdwenen zijn of nog zullen verdwijnen binnen afzienbare tijd. Het enige wat ik kan doen is ze vereeuwigen door ze te schilderen.

​The Poplar Admiral (Limenitis populi) has disappeared from Flanders since 1957. He is still found in some places in Wallonia. I can't bear to think of how many beautiful species have disappeared or will disappear within the not too distant future. The only thing I can do is eternalize them by painting them.

Deze foto verscheen in 2008 in het prominente Amerikaanse tijdschrift 'Letter Arts Review". Je ziet er een aantal van mijn handgeschreven boekjes. Ondertussen zijn het er al meer dan 50 geworden. Ze hebben alle dezelfde afmeting: 75 cm breed, in drie gevouwen, en 14 cm hoog. Ik kan er van alles in kwijt. Soms gaan ze over een welbepaald thema maar soms ook niet. Soms is de rode draad een kleur, een lettertype, maar altijd is er de combinatie van letters en illustratie. En natuurlijk gaat er heel veel aandacht naar de layout. Je zal hier nu en dan nog foto's zien van boekjes van vroeger en nu.

In 2008, this photo appeared in the renowned American magazine "Letter Arts Review." You can see some of my handwritten books. Since then, I've made more than 50. They're all the same size: 75 cm wide, folded in three, and 14 cm high. They can deal with a specific topic or not. Sometimes the connection is a color, a type, but there's always the combination of lettering and illustration. And of course a great attention goes to layout. Occasionally I will post others, old and newer ones.
