Het herfstgevoel komt dichterbij, er zweven blaadjes door de lucht, de wind neemt toe en spinnen komen binnen in huis. De ochtenden zijn koel, de namiddagen kunnen nog warm zijn en het is tijd om afscheid te nemen van de zomer. Een goede reden om een weggevertje te hebben. Deze originele geschilderde heldergekleurde vlinder kan van jou zijn!

A feeling of autumn is approaching, leaves are floating through the air, the wind is rising and spiders are entering the house. The mornings are chilly, the afternoons can still be warm and it's about time to say goodbye to summer. A good reason to have a giveaway. Iedereen kan meedoen! Om in aanmerking te komen laat je me een kort bericht na vóór vrijdag 30 september over wat jouw gevoelens zijn over de herfst. Ik zal een willekeurig briefje trekken uit de hoed en de naam van de gelukkige winnaar hier meedelen op zaterdag 1 oktober.

Anyone can participate! In order to be considered, simply leave me a short message by Friday, September 30th about what your feelings are about autumn. I will pick a name out of a hat at random and will announce the winner right here on Saturday, October 1st. Good luck!

Herfst doet mij denken aan loslaten, soms moeten we dingen gewoon kunnen loslaten, niet altijd gemakkelijk sommige blaadjes blijven ook hardnekkig aan de boom hangen.

I waver back and forth about autumn--the weather, the trees, the air are soft and lovely, but it is after all the gateway to winter. Time to make a list (for me, a short one) about what I like about winter--indoor work on quilting, apple cider, sleeping in a cold room, the holidays. The crickets say we will survive and spring will come again.

In 2006 I visited the Alaskan tundra when it was turning colors before the first snow. It was cold near Mt. McKinnley, my breath hung in the morning air as I watched a grizzly sow through my binoculars chase a pack of wolves for three miles through a shifting red & orange grassland after they had attacked her cubs. The massiveness of the tundra plains gave way to an even more massive blanket of stars every day as the daylight hours got shorter and shorter. It was an awesome and nearly indescribable thing.

I do love Mary Oliver's poetry, I think she captures something about the 'death' of autumn and uses it as a great metaphor for meaning in life, using one's time wisely. Anyway - I don't trust Bing to translate it, I hope you can still enjoy it in English.

When death comes
like the hungry bear in autumn;
when death comes and takes all the bright coins from his purse

to buy me, and snaps the purse shut;
