In 1910 my great-grandfather left for America. He went to NY with the MS Mauretania. My grandfather and his brother accompanied him. His wife and daughter followed some months later. They went to live in Moline, Illinois. In 1912 my grandfather, 18 years old, came back because he was ill. In 1914, he was sent to the trenches as an ambulancier. He studied in the trenches to become a teacher. He survived the first World War and became headmaster in his old village.
