It requires a lot of work and time to come to a final piece. Lots and lots of trials and errors before a piece is finished. Not to mention countless sleepless nights. Now and then I have to clean up my studio and make decisions of what to keep and what to throw away.

Since 2001 I'm making these oblong concertina books. The term 'concertina' refers to a method of parallel folding with the folds alternating between front. This picture shows a detailed view of two of these books. Mustn't read too much into it: the top one is just a compilation of different paintings and text blocks without any cohesion. The only consistency would be color. The bottom one is about an long adventurous trip I made from Belgium to Iran.  This was one of those moments of tidying up my drawing folders, finding a whole lot of pieces of paper with trials and testings from over the last fifteen years and having to decide whether to keep them or throw them away. Well, in the meantime most of them are gone but I've made some pictures of everything because they can inspire me for future pieces. Next time I'll post some other ones!
   Tekst: Paul Cleempoel Dit werkstuk dateert uit de tijd voor ik begon met illustreren. Ik realiseer me nu dat ik nooit meer zoiets maak. Dingen veranderen voortdurend. Aan het einde van de jaren 90 had ik het gevoel dat ik een groot deel van de historische lettervormen in de vingers had: van Romeinse minuskels en kapitalen, over gotisch, uncialen en half-uncialen tot de karolinger en zijn variaties. Ik kon ze redelijk perfect schrijven en dat was dat. Dan begin je je te realiseren dat het daar stopt of dat daar een nieuw avontuur begint: op zoek naar een eigen stijl. Het was niet eenvoudig, maar uiteindelijk vond ik mijn eigen stijl: het combineren van kalligrafie en illustratie. This is an older piece from the time before I started illustrating. I just now realize that I never make pieces like this anymore. Things are constantly changing. At the end of the 90's I had the feeling that I had become master in most of the historical letterforms: from Roman minuscules and Capitals, over Gothic, Uncials and Half Uncials to Carolingian and its variations. I could write them fairly perfect and that was that. Then you start realizing that that's where it ends or where a new adventure starts: looking for your very own style. It has not been easy but in the end I found my own style: combining calligraphy and illustration.

Een tijdje geleden ontdekte ik in mijn kast dit kleine kruidenboekje van jaren geleden. Ik stond aan het begin van mijn letter-avontuur en voelde toen al dat ik kalligrafie zou gaan combineren met illustraties. Het kursief schrift is nooit mijn dada geweest maar ik ben toch tevreden met hoe het boekje eruitziet. Als ik me niet vergis heb ik toen alles met een zelfgesneden ganzenveer geschreven. A while ago I discovered this small book of herbs that I made many years ago. It was the very beginning of my calligraphic journey and I already knew I wanted to combine lettering and illustration. I've never been good at cursive writing, yet I'm happy with the whole concept. I think I remember having written everything with a hand-cut goose feather quill. Zoals je kan zien was mijn inspiratiebron de zee, de golven zijn geborduurd met zijden garen en ik maakte ook een illustratie van een romantische vuurtoren, mijn favoriete bouwwerk. As you can see, source of inspiration was the sea, waves are embroidered with silk yarn and I also added an illustration of a romantic lighthouse, my favorite building.  Enkele boekjes uit de oude doos. Wat vliegt de tijd snel: alweer 10 jaar geleden schilderde ik deze Whippet-hond in gouache. Tegenwoordig gebruik ik meer en meer aquarel omdat het veel makkelijker is om in laagjes te werken en kleurnuances op te bouwen. Toch oogt plakkaatverf in sommige gevallen heel mooi, zoals hier. Je krijgt dan een fluweelachtig effect dat je niet kan bekomen met aquarel. Some oldies. How time flies: 10 years ago I painted this Whippet dog, using gouache. Nowadays I more and more use watercolor because it is much easier to work in layers and build up shades. Still, in some cases, gouache looks very well, as it does here. In deze sombere dagen denk ik met heimwee terug aan onze reis van twee jaar geleden naar het zonnige Zuid-Frankrijk. In these gloomy days I think back with nostalgia to our trip to the sunny South of France, two years ago.  gouache, ink and fineliner
