One of my concertina books from 2008. It's about the sea, wind and seagulls, cats, and illustrations in "The Grete Herball", an English medieval herb book from 1525. As you see, no link between the different topics. The only link is the use of color: black, shades of grey and Venetian red.

Long ago, back into 2001, I first started my concertina books. At that time they were a kind of test books where I tried out different scripts, pens, inks, paints, and papers that I wanted to use in my bigger work for exhibitions. In this way I could pick out the elements that I liked and were interesting enough to use. Ink, different pens, watercolor, gouache, gold leaf.
One of my very first attemptsof writing gothic, many years ago. It's still quite clumsy but the whole is interesting I think. The illustration of the flowers was already there and I thought it a good idea to write around it. Afterwards, I completed it with some lines in carolingian minuscule. Some years ago I attended a workshop with Timothy Noad, an English calligrapher/illuminator who is an expert in raised gesso gilding techniques. I then made this application in my sketchbook: a nearly-square shape with alternating parts in gold leaf and gouache. You can see on the photo that some of the square blocks have been raised. At these places the gold has been applied onto gesso. Gesso is a mixture of slaked plaster, white lead, sugar and fish glue. This is a a labor-intensive work that I'm not going to explain here but you can easily find information on the internet. In the middle I put the word 'or'. The gold on the background is not laid on gesso but on a base of flat mixion. Afterwards I have pricked holes in it.
"Kalligrafie & Ornament" / Timothy Noad & Patricia Seligman In the following book you can find the recipe of the gesso, but also a lot of information and examples of different writing styles and illumination techniques: "The Art of Illuminated Letters" / Timothy Noad & Patricia Seligman Details uit een eerder boekje dat ik maakte met het thema 'herfst'. Details from an earlier book that I made about 'autumn'. In this month of October, the garden is full with these spiders: creepy yet beautiful when viewed from close by. watercolor, gouache and ink
In 2015, I made this concertinabook, 37 years after our honeymoon. For 3 months we travelled across a large part of Europe in a Volkswagen van: an incredible experience! You can see a list of all the countries and cities we visited. Beneath the drawing of our van, I put the names of all our foreign friends we visited on this trip. Due to a tough confrontation in Yugoslavia (with a donkey), we had to remove the tire in front.
One day, I bought myself a sketchbook but soon I realized I didn't like the size of the book and the fact it was already bound. It was so uncomfortable to use, especially since I am a lefthander. Although I write with my right hand, I do all my illustrations with my left hand. I thought it would be more fun to make my own concertina books out of strips of paper (75 cm x 14 cm - folded in three) and produce a "sketchbook" (see below). That was fifteen years ago. The idea of just making sketchbooks has somehow disappeared over the years. Nowadays they are more like diaries, working on one theme in each book: this can be the sea (see below), a color, a season, a holiday town, dogs and cats ... Zoveel jaren later is boekje n° 43 bijna af!
After so many years, book number 43 is nearly finished! Prachtig in grote wolkenboeketten!
Piece of work (sold) of 2009 with a beautiful poem from our Flemish poet Herman De Coninck about cow parsley, a plant that gives me a warm feeling, every year in early spring, when it appears along ditches, woods edges and hedges. Beautiful in large clouds of bouquets! Misschien, ooit ...
This is a detail of a concertina book I made a few years ago. I put it on paper right after reading 'The House of the Spirits' by Isabel Allende. I should have more than one life to do the same for all the books that inspire me! At the moment, I'm rereading with great pleasure "Anna Karenina" by Leo Tolstoy. This book begs for an explanatory annex, with text and illustrations, to understand the multitude of characters and their correlations. Maybe, someday ... |
