For every one of you who came to visit my blog in the past year, I wish a peaceful, healthy and creative 2017! Thank you for visiting me and there will be lots of great posts in the year coming! In February, there will be another give-away piece so keep your eyes open!!!
We had a quiet Christmas and a restful transition from old to new, with great food and drinks in good company and so it should be. We feel incredibly rich that we can do this in such way and that we are surrounded by loving family and friends to share. PEACE was the first and only word that came to my mind for our Christmas and New Year wishes. I don't have to explain that I guess.

Paul Mariën is zo iemand.
Now and then I discover artists who were unknown to me until now and really surprise me. This is the case with a Belgian painter called Paul Mariën. He is one of those painters who, as I discover, never belonged to a particular movement. He plays with tonalities of color and light. His perfectionism, clean volumes, the structure of his work and the magical-realistic feeling make me think immediately of Magritte and Delvaux, but also of some Flemish Primitives. The lighting effects and the red-golden glow of most of his paintings originate thanks to a delicate, careful preparation of the canvas. He applies a primer layer which is composed of Indian yellow, orange yellow and Naples yellow. The result is a soft, velvety undertone, which reflects the light. The thing that makes it really special to me is the use of painted letters, so well done!

Some years ago I attended a workshop with Timothy Noad, an English calligrapher/illuminator who is an expert in raised gesso gilding techniques. I then made this application in my sketchbook: a nearly-square shape with alternating parts in gold leaf and gouache. You can see on the photo that some of the square blocks have been raised. At these places the gold has been applied onto gesso. Gesso is a mixture of slaked plaster, white lead, sugar and fish glue. This is a a labor-intensive work that I'm not going to explain here but you can easily find information on the internet. In the middle I put the word 'or'. The gold on the background is not laid on gesso but on a base of flat mixion. Afterwards I have pricked holes in it.

Last year's page in my sketchbook, finally finished this week. A medley of drawn letter forms, all executed with some black fineliners pointsize 0,3 mm, 0,1 mm and 0,05 mm.

Addition to my large sketchbook (A4). I made this drawing of a small part of my library that is filled with calligraphy and lettering books. I made it myself a challenge to only use black fineliner, trying to obtain a soft gradation from light to dark. Not evident. On the white book covers, I had to use some black color pencil to add shadows. I have highly enjoyed doing this, drawing this wide vatiety of characters!

Just before the falling of the leaves, I've been picking as many different specimens as possible in our garden. What a variety and diversity of forms in one garden. I've redrawn them at full size in my sketchbook. Maybe it would be a good idea to draw them on a nice piece of paper and have it framed. I think it has some potential, this black and white composition.

One day when I had no inspiration I started drawing my kitchen-things and looked up the swedish words online. No plan, just filling the space, done directly with pen. I like to work like that. I worked until every space was filled.

Eerst in potlood, daarna in fineliner. Hieronder zie je het resultaat.
I thought this could be a nice piece of work for a next exhibition. I scanned this page of my sketchbook and began to cut and paste in Photoshop. I left out some objects, changed the lettering here and there, until I had a balanced layout. I printed this design, put it on the lightbox and transferred it on a good quality piece of paper of 21 x 21 cm. First in pencil and then tracing it in fineliner. Below you can see the result.
