After the workshop there was plenty of time to explore an ultramodern town combined with old temples and palaces and masses of colorful people. We visited the nearby neighborhood of Insadong with its small streets full of modern galeries, wooden teahouses, craft shops, boutiques and restaurants

We also went to the mountains that surround Seoul and climbed a peak of 375 m in the company of Joon, Cecilia and her husband. Thank you for taking us there. We were exhausted, not being used to mountainous landscapes, but so grateful for that experience.

I've been very fortunate to host a workshop in Torino, Italy. A city that I didn't visit yet and I was pleasantly surprised by its beauty and its old history! Since I came back, I started a new concertina book about all the fantastic things I saw. Below, you can see a small map of the city center where I taught and where I stayed in a splendid palazzo. And how much I enjoyed drawing this map as precise as possible! I'm pretty sure that I'm going to draw other maps in the future.

A few weeks ago I was blessed with a group of enthusiastic students for a colored pencil workshop. A butterfly is, of course, a rewarding topic for study and spring is the perfect time of the year to do this.  It's been two most enjoyable days where everyone learned about the different types of pencils, best papers to work on and best techniques to draw a photo-realistic butterfly. Using colored pencils is much more than just coloring, it's building up layer by layer and I'm sure that every student in the class can agree with me that working with colored pencils helps to create a feeling of calmness and Zen!

Some years ago I attended a workshop with Timothy Noad, an English calligrapher/illuminator who is an expert in raised gesso gilding techniques. I then made this application in my sketchbook: a nearly-square shape with alternating parts in gold leaf and gouache. You can see on the photo that some of the square blocks have been raised. At these places the gold has been applied onto gesso. Gesso is a mixture of slaked plaster, white lead, sugar and fish glue. This is a a labor-intensive work that I'm not going to explain here but you can easily find information on the internet. In the middle I put the word 'or'. The gold on the background is not laid on gesso but on a base of flat mixion.  Afterwards I have pricked holes in it.

In the following book you can find the recipe of the gesso, but also a lot of information and examples of different writing styles and illumination techniques:

Thank you Kristi, Alice, Deborah, Marika, Maarit, Virginia, Wendy, Carole, Anne-Marie, Stephanie, Christine, Susan, J.P. and Sheryl, for the entertaining workshop we had in September at the European Lettering Institute. So many talented people from different parts of the US, France and Finland. In this short workshop we focused on the creation of a concertina book and you all did a good job! Now let's hope that they'll be finished, maybe by the end of the year!
