Detail of a concertinabook I made back in 2012. As you can see, source of inspiration was the sea, waves are embroidered with silk yarn and I also added an illustration of a romantic lighthouse, my favorite building.

Some oldies. How time flies: 10 years ago I painted this Whippet dog, using gouache. Nowadays I more and more use watercolor because it is much easier to work in layers and build up shades. Still, in some cases, gouache looks very well, as it does here. You get a velvety effect that you can't achieve with watercolor.

In these gloomy days I think back with nostalgia to our trip to the sunny South of France,
two years ago.

In 2008, this photo appeared in the renowned American magazine "Letter Arts Review." You can see some of my handwritten books. Since then, I've made more than 50. They're all the same size: 75 cm wide, folded in three, and 14 cm high. They can deal with a specific topic or not. Sometimes the connection is a color, a type, but there's always the combination of lettering and illustration. And of course a great attention goes to layout. Occasionally I will post others, old and newer ones.

One of my concertina books from 2008. It's about the sea, wind and seagulls, cats, and illustrations in "The Grete Herball", an English medieval herb book from 1525. As you see, no link between the different topics. The only link is the use of color: black, shades of grey and Venetian red.

Long ago, back into 2001, I first started my concertina books. At that time they were a kind of test books where I tried out different scripts, pens, inks, paints, and papers that I wanted to use in my bigger work for exhibitions. In this way I could pick out the elements that I liked and were interesting enough to use.

One of my very first attemptsof writing gothic, many years ago. It's still quite clumsy but the whole is interesting I think. The illustration of the flowers was already there and I thought it a good idea to write around it. Afterwards, I completed it with some lines in carolingian minuscule.

Some years ago I attended a workshop with Timothy Noad, an English calligrapher/illuminator who is an expert in raised gesso gilding techniques. I then made this application in my sketchbook: a nearly-square shape with alternating parts in gold leaf and gouache. You can see on the photo that some of the square blocks have been raised. At these places the gold has been applied onto gesso. Gesso is a mixture of slaked plaster, white lead, sugar and fish glue. This is a a labor-intensive work that I'm not going to explain here but you can easily find information on the internet. In the middle I put the word 'or'. The gold on the background is not laid on gesso but on a base of flat mixion.  Afterwards I have pricked holes in it.

In the following book you can find the recipe of the gesso, but also a lot of information and examples of different writing styles and illumination techniques:

Last year's page in my sketchbook, finally finished this week. A medley of drawn letter forms, all executed with some black fineliners pointsize 0,3 mm, 0,1 mm and 0,05 mm.

Addition to my large sketchbook (A4). I made this drawing of a small part of my library that is filled with calligraphy and lettering books. I made it myself a challenge to only use black fineliner, trying to obtain a soft gradation from light to dark. Not evident. On the white book covers, I had to use some black color pencil to add shadows. I have highly enjoyed doing this, drawing this wide vatiety of characters!
