Over the last two weeks, I have been enjoying the sunny moments of spring. As a result, it has inspired me to spend more time outside, looking at those beautiful blossoms and blooming of trees, and smelling the freshly cut grass. So for today's post, I thought I would share with you a selection of different berries that are inspiring me, now that spring is in the air. You can see a picture of the work before and after text is added. It looks very easy but there's a lot of thinking and puzzling to it. I made 4 different versions before I ended up with this arrangement. I like the words to be curved rather than straight. It has a more organic look don't you think?

This is an older piece from the time before I started illustrating. I just now realize that I never make pieces like this anymore. Things are constantly changing. At the end of the 90's I had the feeling that I had become master in most of the historical letterforms: from Roman minuscules and Capitals, over Gothic, Uncials and Half Uncials to  Carolingian and its variations. I could write them fairly perfect and that was that. Then you start realizing that that's where it ends or where a new adventure starts:  looking for your very own style. It has not been easy but in the end I found my own style: combining calligraphy and illustration.

A while ago I discovered this small book of herbs that I made many years ago. It was the very beginning of my calligraphic journey and I already knew I wanted to combine lettering and illustration. I've never been good at cursive writing, yet I'm happy with the whole concept. I think I remember having written everything with a hand-cut goose feather quill.

It’s cold, too cold for my body but I drag myself through winter as good as it gets. I really do make an effort to concentrate on nice and cozy moments like watching a good film, sitting by the fireplace, enjoying my favorite music, making crossword puzzles, read a good book, playing board games with the children and lighting a lot of candles in the evening. I made this drawing at the very start of winter, already longing for spring and summer. It also helps :)

Some year ago, I set out to discover the hidden pieces of my family tree. I have always had a love for history. Learning the stories of my ancestors and the events they lived through is fascinating. I have boxes full of old photos, prayer cards, obituaries, diaries, wills ... I found out a lot of interesting facts. Some ascendants came from France or moved to The Netherlands, some were criminals and some were knights. Most of them were working class people but I also found some mayors. Last month I've been busy making a concertina book, focusing on my maternal ancestry. I ended up with nine generations of my mother’s side of the family. I hope to find more information in the following weeks and months!

Since I'm still in holiday mode, I hope you'll excuse me from not showing up with a lot of new posts. This is a butterfly I painted just before leaving for England, a commission for a wedding present. The couple wanted a colorful butterfly with both names and it will probably be used for the wedding invitation.

This page in my sketchbook dates from 2014. I'm looking forward to  coming summer, especially since this spring has not yet given a lot of warm days. I can't wait to see all my garden plants reappear in coming summer. Some of these plants have already had their bloom, but most of them are yet to come.
