"Then summer fades and passes and October comes. We'll smell smoke then, and feel an unexpected sharpness, a thrill of nervousness, swift elation, a sense of sadness and departure."
Thomas Wolfe

A feeling of autumn is approaching, leaves are floating through the air, the wind is rising and spiders are entering the house. The mornings are chilly, the afternoons can still be warm and it's about time to say goodbye to summer. A good reason to have a giveaway. This original small painting of a brightly colored butterfly could be yours!

In the past, I noticed that when starting a new piece of work, I'd try out some of the illustrations or lettering on bits of paper (see below). Then I'd copy them on the final piece and throw the try-outs away. Every time I'd empty the bin, I would almost feel sorry not to be able to keep these roughs.

One day, I bought myself a sketchbook but soon I realized I didn't like the size of the book and the fact it was already bound. It was so uncomfortable to use, especially since I am a lefthander. Although I write with my right hand, I do all my illustrations with my left hand.

I thought it would be more fun to make my own concertina books out of strips of paper (75 cm x 14 cm - folded in three) and produce a "sketchbook" (see below).
That was fifteen years ago. The idea of just making sketchbooks has somehow disappeared over the years. Nowadays they are more like diaries, working on one theme in each book: this can be the sea (see below), a color, a season, a holiday town, dogs and cats ...

Prachtig in grote wolkenboeketten!
Piece of work (sold) of 2009 with a beautiful poem from our Flemish poet Herman De Coninck about cow parsley, a plant that gives me a warm feeling, every year in early spring, when it appears along ditches, woods edges and hedges. Beautiful in large clouds of bouquets!

Misschien, ooit ...
This is a detail of a concertina book I made a few years ago. I put it on paper right after reading 'The House of the Spirits' by Isabel Allende. I should have more than one life to do the same for all the books that inspire me! At the moment, I'm rereading with great pleasure "Anna Karenina" by Leo Tolstoy. This book begs for an explanatory annex, with text and illustrations, to understand the multitude of characters and their correlations. Maybe, someday ...

Page from one of my concertina books: two poems I love, one in English and one in Dutch. And of course the inevitable illustrations.

I am very proud to have a big story in "The Alphabet", the journal of the friends of calligraphy, based in San Francisco, California, USA. Carl Roars did a great job, not only with the articles but also with the black cut-out alphabet cover: beautiful!

I frequently get asked how I proceed in making my concertina books. Well, using this new 'travel' booklet (not yet finished) I can demonstrate that because I started it recently and I can still figure out all of the steps. First of all, wherever I am, I take a lot of notes. When back home, I look up information online. For this book, I started painting a detail from a trompe-l'oeil from the Cathedral Sainte-Cécile in Albi (France). I was really overwhelmed by the many murals I saw there. Based on the pictures taken there, I chose a simple design in shades of gray. Then I drew the text La Montagne Noir and I painted it in with gouache. The firebugs came next. I had made some sketches on the spot: there were plenty of them on the hibiscus near our cottage. Next steps were the name of our village, the explanatory text about the murals (found online) and the names of some towns and villages that we visited. There, the first steps have been taken, one and a half page to go!

14 years ago I made this try-out of gouache and pen & ink on different types of paper and fixed them with embroidery thread. This goes back to the time I absolutely wanted to combine calligraphy and embroidery. It never came to anything up till now, can still happen...

In 2009 I stayed in the south of France for one week. I was there to help some friends who were renovating an old convent/boarding school into a B&B. Of these memories I made another booklet. I painted the old house plaque above the front door. And you also see some beetles and a mosquito (there were too many of them). And two butterflies of which I exchanged the names accidentally hence I put a little asterisk, and, at the bottom of the page, a rectification in French. There's also a short reporting of my stay there and some history about the village of Parisot.
