I 'm very happy that these beetles and butterfly all have found a new home and are in loving hands. Time to make new series of tiny creatures!

This detail is from one of my first concertinabooks in 2001. They were really 'practice' books where I tried out different scripts and illustrations. You can see clearly that this was my first attempt to write gothic script. But ... I'm really proud of the illustration of the shiny beetle!

"What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet..."

And yet, I am happy with all those beautiful, poetic, evocative names of roses. Who are the people who invent these names anyway?

Teddy bear was named after President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt who, during a hunt,
refused to shoot a captured bear. Needless to say, the press heard of this event. It inspired cartoonist Clifford Berryman for a cartoon which appeared in almost all major newspapers. The owner of a small candy store in Brooklyn made a  small toy bear like the one on the cartoon and  put him on display along with a sign saying "Teddy's bear". There was so much demand for the bear that Michtom closed his candy store within a year and,   in 1907, founded a toy factory which is still one of the largest in the world.

And this history inspired me to make a bear illustration to celebrate the birth of a lovely baby boy named Lukas.

Alles rondom mij geeft me inspiratie.

I'm inspired by everything that surrounds me, usually not more than the everyday life. Here, my Spanish class was my source of inspiration: counting from one to thirty. By writing it down in a slow, controlled pace, I can remember it much better. And at the same time it is a snapshot for future time.

In "The Hidden Force", novel by the Dutch writer Louis Couperus (1863 – 1923),  the decline and fall of the Dutch resident Van Oudyck is caused by his inability to see further than his own Western rationalism. He is blind and deaf to the slumbering powers of the East Indian people and countryside. The black magic, bird calls, vegetation, heat and the mysterious, hostile attitude of their Javanese subjects prove stronger than the cool power of the colonials.

This detail from one of my leporello books shows a short fragment from the novel where Couperus describes nature in a cinematic way, beautiful! I used the warm colours reddish-brown and yellow because they make me think of the Dutch East Indies.

For those who don't speak Dutch: this is a short text, written by a wonderful Flemish writer. I'm really sorry, but I don't venture to translate this in English because I wouldn't do justice to it.

Whistling wind, cracking branches, sodden streets and gray skies. Beautiful poems but I'm yearning for a new spring. I have been working very hard these past few weeks, have finished a commission of tiny bugs and butterflies and they're ready to find their new owners.

14 years ago I made this try-out of gouache and pen & ink on different types of paper and fixed them with embroidery thread. This goes back to the time I absolutely wanted to combine calligraphy and embroidery. It never came to anything up till now, can still happen...
