I illustrated some pages of my grandfather's diary because it is such an interesting story. He left for America with his brother and parents in 1910 but became homesick and the whole family came back to Belgium. This was just at the start of  WWI and, before he knew, he was a stretcher bearer on the battlefield. But he was able to finish his studies - he wanted to be a teacher - learning in the trenches and  passing his exam in France.
