"Then summer fades and passes and October comes. We'll smell smoke then, and feel an unexpected sharpness, a thrill of nervousness, swift elation, a sense of sadness and departure."

A feeling of autumn is approaching, leaves are floating through the air, the wind is rising and spiders are entering the house. The mornings are chilly, the afternoons can still be warm and it's about time to say goodbye to summer. A good reason to have a giveaway. This original small painting of a brightly colored butterfly could be yours!

Anyone can participate! In order to be considered, simply leave me a short message by Friday, September 30th about what your feelings are about autumn. I will pick a name out of a hat at random and will announce the winner right here on Saturday, October 1st. Good luck!

In 2015, I made this concertinabook, 37 years after our honeymoon. For 3 months we travelled across a large part of Europe in a Volkswagen van: an incredible experience! You can see a list of all the countries and cities we visited. Beneath the drawing of our van, I put the names of all our foreign friends we visited on this trip.

Due to a tough confrontation in Yugoslavia (with a donkey), we had to remove the tire in front.

In the past, I noticed that when starting a new piece of work, I'd try out some of the illustrations or lettering on bits of paper (see below). Then I'd copy them on the final piece and throw the try-outs away. Every time I'd empty the bin, I would almost feel sorry not to be able to keep these roughs.

One day, I bought myself a sketchbook but soon I realized I didn't like the size of the book and the fact it was already bound. It was so uncomfortable to use, especially since I am a lefthander. Although I write with my right hand, I do all my illustrations with my left hand.

I thought it would be more fun to make my own concertina books out of strips of paper (75 cm x 14 cm - folded in three) and produce a "sketchbook" (see below).
That was fifteen years ago. The idea of just making sketchbooks has somehow disappeared over the years. Nowadays they are more like diaries, working on one theme in each book: this can be the sea (see below), a color, a season, a holiday town, dogs and cats ...

Zoveel jaren later is boekje n° 43 bijna af!

Now for something completely different! For a long time, I've been wanting to draw a portrait of my grandfather. I already made one of my uncle and then I used colored pencil. This time I wanted to try a different medium: a black fineliner, like the one I used to make my last project: the drawing of pens. I absolutely wanted an oval shape because that is the style of that time. I used a technique called stippling, because this is a technique I've been wanting to try out. To create dark areas, the dots are drawn close together, for light spaces they're drawn further apart. The hardest partwill be to add text around the portrait. I would like to put name, date of birth and death and some other short line, perhaps something poetic. I will definitely post the finished portrait here!
