It’s cold, too cold for my body but I drag myself through winter as good as it gets. I really do make an effort to concentrate on nice and cozy moments like watching a good film, sitting by the fireplace, enjoying my favorite music, making crossword puzzles, read a good book, playing board games with the children and lighting a lot of candles in the evening. I made this drawing at the very start of winter, already longing for spring and summer. It also helps :)

Some year ago, I set out to discover the hidden pieces of my family tree. I have always had a love for history. Learning the stories of my ancestors and the events they lived through is fascinating. I have boxes full of old photos, prayer cards, obituaries, diaries, wills ... I found out a lot of interesting facts. Some ascendants came from France or moved to The Netherlands, some were criminals and some were knights. Most of them were working class people but I also found some mayors. Last month I've been busy making a concertina book, focusing on my maternal ancestry. I ended up with nine generations of my mother’s side of the family. I hope to find more information in the following weeks and months!

Today, my daughter asked me if I knew Domenico Gnoli, an Italian artist . No, I've never heard of him! She knew his work from school. We looked him up on the internet and immediately my attention was drawn. Gnoli (1933 - 1970) was a stage designer and painter, born in Rome. Like American Pop artists, Gnoli took as his subject matter mundane objects, rendering them with exactitude. The paintings are large - some over 6 feet on their longest side - and present blown-up details of furniture, hair, clothing, a brick wall. I love this dreamlike proximity to each item, his attention to detail and the colors that he uses: I'm a fan!

A while ago, I got this commission for a logo for a biological florist. The fact that it's about flowers is of course something that inspires me enormously. So I started this design full of enthusiasm and made a lot of different styles.
And this is the one that was finally chosen. A good choice, I must say, because it reflects very well the atmosphere of the not too sophisticate flowers this client is working with. By the way, this client is my very precious niece and I'm very thankful that I could work for her! The final design is carried out in negative, white on dark grey. Below you can see the business card. It turned out beautiful, don't you think?

Since the beginning of this year, I've made a lot of patterns, as you can see in the picture below. I love it when they are fully made by hand, with all the irregularities associated with them. I'm looking for an easy way to make a repetitive pattern out of a scanned drawing so it can be used for printing on bedding sets, pillows, notebooks etcetera. Can anyone help me with information about this? Any advice is more than welcome!

Nature keeps inspiring me!
Before summer I painted these three yellow beetles. I've really been enjoying the contrast of yellow and black. To paint such tiny creatures is an intense job and it requires great dedication and passion but it is very rewarding!

Nearly finished!

I've been in England recently and didn't have the time yet to start drawing again. So here are some photos I took visiting 13th century Chapter House in Salisbury. This is the place where you can see the Magna Carta. It is one of several copies written immediately after King John agreed peace terms. It is written by hand in Latin on parchment.

What to do when it's pouring rain during your vacation abroad? Drawing of course! The day before was quite sunny and I picked wildflowers on a long walk. I chose these two beauties to draw a floral pattern. It's a nice start but I still have to finish it. And once again I've come to the conclusion that inspiration is everywhere around us, and certainly in nature.

Since I'm still in holiday mode, I hope you'll excuse me from not showing up with a lot of new posts. This is a butterfly I painted just before leaving for England, a commission for a wedding present. The couple wanted a colorful butterfly with both names and it will probably be used for the wedding invitation.

Now and then, I love to work with color pencils. It's a very easeful activity. With some good music in the background I can go on for hours. It's a real build-up job. A colored pencil drawing can easily have thirty to forty layers of color applied. Because of the translucent qualities of this medium, the white of the paper plays an important role in this proces.
