I continued to work on the lighthouses. Not sure if it's finished or not yet. I need some time to think about it. Luckily my life does not depend on it :) The last bits of the puzzle are always the most difficult ones: there's some space left and I have to consider: do I fill it up or do I leave it as it is?

I've always been attracted by lighthouses. They are usually in dramatic spots and there is a certain mystery and majesty radiating from them. Could I happily live in one? I think so!

PALE BLUE DOT: A VISION OF THE HUMAN FUTURE IN SPACE
Z
eer inspirerend tekst door Carl Sagan / very inspirational text by Carl Sagan
“Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there-on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam."

In 1986, he was the first to establish a workshop specializing in fine contemporary letter carving. Since then he leads his own studio in Bruges. Several apprentices were trained and have followed in his footsteps. Something to be proud of!

I am fond of the work of David Jones. His letters are a permanent source of inspiration. Cheerful and charming letters stand in stark contrast to the difficult life he led.

David Jones (1895-1974) was a poet, painter, essayist and maker of inscriptions. There is a feeling of musicality and naivety in his lettering art. At Art School he had closely studied the lettering of the Trajan's Column, an example of perfection from the 2nd century AD. It is important to recognize this because it emphasizes the true extend to which his work was a matter of choice rather than ignorance of "correct" forms. Jones' lettering developed his peculiar forms and design over a substantial period of time.

I would like to post a beautiful picture of my work very soon, together with some background info  but for now I can only show this picture of the window.

De mooie etalage van mijn gastheer Djamil Zenasne met mijn 'pennen'werk en schetsboek in de kijker/the beautiful window of my host Djamil Zenasni with my 'pens' work and sketchbook in the spotlight.
The 'Bellettrages' project is over. During the entire month of May one could see art works in several windows in Bruges, made by Bruges artists. The selection ranged from lettering, over illustration, painting and design, to paper and textile art. The S-wan guides put on a tour guide and  gave explanations on both the artists and their work and the history of the shops and its owners. We can proudly conclude that this project was a success and worth repeating. Thanks to Hilke Boudens who managed the whole: you did a great job!
