CONCERTINA BOOKS

I'm a sampler. Just like embroiderers who, in the old days, made stitch samplers, or musicians in hip hop culture who bring together different pieces of existing music, I gather pieces of text, beautiful words, nice lettering, small illustrations, which I then draw, write or paint on good quality, characterful  paper. I build, I puzzle and look for links between multiple elements. This can be by topic, by meaning, by colour, or sometimes there's no link at all.

There's no commercial purpose behind these concertina books. Although I never know what the next book will look like, they always measure 75 x 14 cm and are folded in three. I start somewhere on the sheet, sometimes with an illustration, sometimes with a poem or just a word or one letter, and then I proceed to the left, to the right, up and down, puzzling until I'm happy with the final layout.
