The sunny start of a new day in my studio! I have plenty of ideas and want to make them all come to life. But why do I always feel like life is too short? Our good friend Brody Neuenschwander gave me this wonderful book as a Christmas gift. It's about garden design, and this happens to be a big area of interest of mine. I want to make something in relation to gardens, maybe a print or a series of greeting cards!

I love butterflies and I never get tired of painting them. Here's two details of a concertinabook I made in 2009.
I'm halfway through this sketchbook page and below you can see a slide show most of the drawings. I'm learning Spanish and this is a good way for me to remember words. I still have to fill the other side of the page. My intention is to use all these small drawings in a new piece and to make a print of it. Watercolor painting of a twig of eucalyptus, with credits to Lupen Grainne who's photo I was allowed to use as a reference: thank you Lupen! I love the greyish color of the leaves with the bright red branches.
I started this painting because of the beautiful shaped leaves of the Adiantum. The common name of this plant is 'maidenhair fern', isn't that fairy-like! And it's only by painting this lacy beauty that I noticed the leaf shapes are very similar to the shapes of a Ginkgo Biloba leaf but then much smaller. I know that because I've painted lots and lots of ginkgo leaves in the last few years. I added another plant with fine, needle-like leaves: the asparagus. A wild plant and family of our well-known asparagus with edible shoots.
Over the last two weeks, I have been enjoying the sunny moments of spring. As a result, it has inspired me to spend more time outside, looking at those beautiful blossoms and blooming of trees, and smelling the freshly cut grass. So for today's post, I thought I would share with you a selection of different berries that are inspiring me, now that spring is in the air. You can see a picture of the work before and after text is added. It looks very easy but there's a lot of thinking and puzzling to it. I made 4 different versions before I ended up with this arrangement. I like the words to be curved rather than straight. It has a more organic look don't you think?
A while ago I discovered this small book of herbs that I made many years ago. It was the very beginning of my calligraphic journey and I already knew I wanted to combine lettering and illustration. I've never been good at cursive writing, yet I'm happy with the whole concept. I think I remember having written everything with a hand-cut goose feather quill. It’s cold, too cold for my body but I drag myself through winter as good as it gets. I really do make an effort to concentrate on nice and cozy moments like watching a good film, sitting by the fireplace, enjoying my favorite music, making crossword puzzles, read a good book, playing board games with the children and lighting a lot of candles in the evening. I made this drawing at the very start of winter, already longing for spring and summer. It also helps :) Black fineliner on paper
What to do when it's pouring rain during your vacation abroad? Drawing of course! The day before was quite sunny and I picked wildflowers on a long walk. I chose these two beauties to draw a floral pattern. It's a nice start but I still have to finish it. And once again I've come to the conclusion that inspiration is everywhere around us, and certainly in nature. Here I am, finally back to blogging, and with great enthusiasm! I needed some time to read all of the submissions. Thank you so much, my dear blog visitors! Now I know my audience a bit better and know that you are considerable! Out of this small survey I learned this: You are mainly from Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Australia and the United States. Your age ranges from 19 to over 50. You mainly found me through Google or other search engine, my website, Instagram, Pinterest an FB. Also thanks for the many kind comments. I have been reading them with great pleasure.
We have been enjoying very high temperatures over the last few weeks and on days like that, I CAN'T stay in the house! I've been working in the garden: sowing, pruning, planting, picking fruit... And of course I've also been drawing outside. All those different shapes of flowers gave me a lot of inspiration. So I started drawing a pattern in my sketchbook. I didn't know what it would lead me to and that is ever so exciting! Below you can see the start of this drawing: first sketching with pencil, then traced over using a black fineliner. Not one flower or leaf is the same. On the second picture you can see the finished drawing. The week before I had been working with gold leaf. I found it a nice idea to put golden dots in every heart of every flower. Because I like to work with gesso, they have a nice relievo and I can give them an extremely high gloss by burnishing them. |
