I've always been attracted by lighthouses. They are usually in dramatic spots and there is a certain mystery and majesty radiating from them. Could I happily live in one? I think so! PALE BLUE DOT: A VISION OF THE HUMAN FUTURE IN SPACE Zeer inspirerend tekst door Carl Sagan / very inspirational text by Carl Sagan “Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there-on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam."
Beech leaf, jar with red colour pigment and warm colour scheme. Gouache, water colour and Chinese stick ink.
I am very proud to have a big story in "The Alphabet", the journal of the friends of calligraphy, based in San Francisco, California, USA. Carl Roars did a great job, not only with the articles but also with the black cut-out alphabet cover: beautiful!

This is a concertinabook that I made in 2015. I will go through the working process with you. I'd be happy to answer any questions you have! At the bottom you 'll find the full text that inspired me for making this booklet.
Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space by Carl Sagan.
“Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there - on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam. The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand. It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.”
I frequently get asked how I proceed in making my concertina books. Well, using this new 'travel' booklet (not yet finished) I can demonstrate that because I started it recently and I can still figure out all of the steps. First of all, wherever I am, I take a lot of notes. When back home, I look up information online. For this book, I started painting a detail from a trompe-l'oeil from the Cathedral Sainte-Cécile in Albi (France). I was really overwhelmed by the many murals I saw there. Based on the pictures taken there, I chose a simple design in shades of gray. Then I drew the text La Montagne Noir and I painted it in with gouache. The firebugs came next. I had made some sketches on the spot: there were plenty of them on the hibiscus near our cottage. Next steps were the name of our village, the explanatory text about the murals (found online) and the names of some towns and villages that we visited. There, the first steps have been taken, one and a half page to go!
I 'm very happy that these beetles and butterfly all have found a new home and are in loving hands. Time to make new series of tiny creatures!
This detail is from one of my first concertinabooks in 2001. They were really 'practice' books where I tried out different scripts and illustrations. You can see clearly that this was my first attempt to write gothic script. But ... I'm really proud of the illustration of the shiny beetle! |
